    Default Got er done

Been a heck of a project with this weather. Took me two mornings, but most of it got done today. Learning and getting faster at it. New treated 2x6’s, through bolted with 3/8 stainless carriage bolts, washers, nylok nuts. And gatorbak on. That stuff lives up to it’s name, like wrassling a 12 footer putting on. I had two little quick clamp gizmos, wish I’d had 4. But it’s on, and I liked how it loaded. Lots better than the spongy old carpeted boards. Found center and slid right up to the stop.

Looks good Jeff! How slick is that gator back? The stuff on mine is too slick on steep ramps, I detest it…LOL

Well, only one loading on it - but where it stopped when I idled in - when I was crawling off the bow onto steps, it didn’t move or slide back any. I backed way in and wet everything like they said, then pulled back up. Maybe a little tackier than the carpet was, first impression. But so far I like it. That was a coe ramp, so they’re pretty legit. I know about those that ain’t right. A couple I used to use, you’d have your tailpipe under before you could get a heavy boat off the trailer. And one, OMG. On Wilson Lake. When your bow stop was in sorta the right place, back end of the trailer would be 10 foot deep. You really needed a friend to put hands on and keep the boat centered as you pulled out.

Having repaired several customer's transoms, skegs, etc from their boats sliding off their new trailer bunk setups I always recommend waiting to unhook the bow till the Butt is over the water. Once you have a known pattern of reliability that your boat will stay in place you're safe. Most dropped prematurely on steep ramps when they slid off.

Roger that. I’m 99% launching and loading by myself - so I put a foot or so slack in the winch strap, lock the ratchet, then unhook when I’m in the water and on the bow.

First time launching with it on yesterday, 2cd loading - I really couldn’t tell any difference launching from the old carpet. I have to be practically truck bumper over the water before boat will back off the trailer.

Loading, I came in barely above idle, and at first I thought I was too hot/too far in and was gonna smack heck out of the stop. But it stopped about right, and I still had to use low gear on the winch to get that last 6 inches or so, same as carpet.
As long as it holds up, think I’m glad I went that way. It seems like at first contact it is more slippery, but once it gets some weight it is about the same grip. My pig probably weighs over 3,500 with gas batteries tackle.

Pretty work! It looks like a factory job. In a few years I'll need to do mine (some staples coming out now). Please keep us posted on how you like these long term.
Thanks J White thanked you for this post
