    Default Water Pump Impellar Orientation

My engine is a 2008 75hp optimax. It is a standard clockwise rotation drive shaft engine. Which way should I twist/orientate the impellar when installing it in the cup? A or BName: Screenshot_20230429_021511.jpg

B is correct. I put the impeller on the shaft first, easier to line up the key and keyway. Lube the impeller with liquid dish soap then install the cup over the impeller. Twist the cup counter-clockwise as you are installing it over the impeller.

B is the same way that my mechanic who fixed my problem put the impellar in the cup. When the engine was started it would not pick up water. I reversed the twist reinstalled and now it works....I don't understand.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense, but if it's working????. Do you have a water pressure gauge? If so, what was it before and after you changed it?

Thinking more about this, it should move water in either orientation but the "B" position may be less stressful on the fins.

I do have a pressure gauge. It ran good numbers till the day I had it loose water pressure. It ran 12psi at 5000rpm. I opened it and the cup gasket was blown and I replaced the impellar just because. I haven't water tested it yet.

Place the cup over the impeller and twist the drive shaft clockwise.

No matter how you orient it I would bet that once you hit 3000 rpm the impeller is now situated like in "B". I can't see anyway possible for it to stay in the "A" orientation at 3000 rpm, unless you put in a used impeller that has already taken a "set" in that direction.
