Had a 90 Evinrude that would do that when trimmed up too high.
Bought this boat with plans to put a new motor on it when I sold my Tracker. But since the Tracker hasn’t sold I may have to use this one for awhile. It starts up fine and has a pee stream bigger than any boat I’ve seen. Someone told me to take the thermostat out and it just makes it run rough and after 2-3 minutes the overheat light comes back on. Once the light comes on it goes off after about 1 minute once I put it in slow idle speed. Any ideas. Thanks. Join

Replace the impeller. The impeller has 2 functions. It "pulls" water at low RPM via suction. It "pushes" water at higher RPM. It does this as when in neutral there is virtually zero pressure pushing water into the pump.
I wouldn't put too much faith in the "size" of the pee stream. I'd guess at least 30 times more water has to flow thru the block to see the same type of flow.
I agree. I would suspect the impeller too. Its not that hard of a job and they should be replaced every couple years anyway.
If it's been a while, do it right.
- New impeller, seals, and cover
- New thermostat, poppet, spring, and gasket set
- Consider a new temp sending unit matched to a gauge. I got a gauge and ohm matched sender off Amazon for around $30.
Then, you know what you have got.
