Default Do I have a long shaft or short shaft?

I have measured my shaft I think properly and it is 18 inches. I read where 15 inch shaft is short and 20 is long. What do I have? It is a 5 hp two stroke Nissan

From what I have read a long shaft motor is a minimum of 20"s long. All of it is clear as mud

You have a short shaft motor. Measure from the bottom of the clamp on transom to the the fin on the lower part of the motor.

My transom is 17 inches and I bought a short shaft 25hp Mercury. It fits my boat perfectly. The boat came with a 5hp short shaft Mercury which fit good but was underpowered for the boat. You will need a short shaft motor. I had the same concern since my transom was right in the middle between 15-20 inches.

What clamp? The screws on inside of transom?

A lot of outboards are actually longer than the 15" or 20" specs by 1-2". I think they do this to give them some margin for boats that my have transoms too tall or operator error. Basically so it gets good cooling water flow on plane.

18" seems like an odd measurement though. I guess I would say short shaft though even though I've never measured one that long.
