I just performed the diode test. When testing from red wire to yellow gray wire in One Direction I get a reading of .470, swap leads and I get no reading. Testing from red wire to solid yellow I get 0.000 in both directions so I assume the regulator must be at fault. Also looking at the regulator it seems that there might be some little specks of melted rubber that looked to be coming out of itName: JPEG_20211228_065221_8802411091570343078.jpg

I had lots of problems with the regulator/rectifer on my 1990 Johnson 150. When it would not charge the tach would also not work so this was a good sign it was bad. It looks about like the same one as in your picture. One actually started to catch fire while on a long run. I replaced several with OMC regulators and all eventually failed. Finally changed to a Siaria brand and it has been good ever since.

Sorry on a late response but I have it resolved. It was the regulator, my tach never stopped working. I guess that only one of the yellow wires was bad since it was reading in both directions. I just wasn't getting any juice back in the battery when the outboard was running so it was eventually killing it.

You had a shorted diode. You have 4 of them and it depends on which one shorts to affect the tach. On older motors the rectifiers (diodes) are seperate from the regulator. And a lot cheaper when they are separate.
