    Default 2000 Honda 90

I got my pontoon out of storage and replaced the gas and added a can of sea foam. Cranked up and ran good above 2000 rpm but would not run below 1500 rpm. Took it to a new mechanic I never used before. He cleaned the carburetor and installed a new fuel hose bulb and spark plugs. Still will not idle. Ordered and replaced both fuel pumps and still will not idle. He also synced all 4 carbs and still will not idle. Right now I am $450.00 lighter and boat not fixed. Anybody got any suggestions as what may be the problem or what to check. I only use non ethanol gas. Thanks

2 years ago I got a boat that sat for 7 years. It has a 1997 BF90. Got it to crank and idle but gas was pouring out of top carb and one fuel pump had a drip at a screw. I ended up getting all 4 carbs rebuilt, new fuel lines, filter and carbs synced by a Honda Dealer. I installed 2 fuel pumps myself. Have you checked the idle adjustment screw? I understand Honda Carbs have some tiny "jets"?? that can easily clog up. My engine has 2045 hours and runs really good since carbs were rebuilt. I also bought a Honda Shop Manual for my BF90. I will try to look in it and see what or IF it says anything about the problem you are having...my guess is the "idle jets" are clogged.

I always - always - always use a quality fuel stabilizer in my boat and all small engines year round.
The one I use is Mercury Quickare, can find at Walmart or just about anywhere. One ounce to 10 gallons of gas, one bottle treats 120 gallons, about $5 - $6 per bottle if you shop around. Not pricey, keeps gas fresh for at least 12 months.
It sure works for me, even with the Honda Engine pressure washer that I only run once or twice a year.
On a side note, I also have a Linde Spark Tester that plugs in between the plug wire and the spark plug that with the engine running, you can see the spark, as well as the brightness, rate, and quality of the spark, around $5 from Amazon. Always good to know. Clean proper gap at the plugs, anti seize on the threads, dielectric grease at each wire connection thru good wires, and it should purr for you. Good luck!

First thing if you took it to a shop , because it wouldn't idle. And they worked on it and it still doesn't idle , get your money back.

Another thing I'll add if it's a four cylinder, with 2 coils
1 coil for 1, 2 cylinders and 1 coil for for 3, 4 cylinders. If it is skipping and not running rite at idle , put your hand over front of carb. When idling and if motor picks up . it's that coil pack.

Why is Sea foam a no no? I am only asking for information. Not an attempt to start a debate.

I would also be unhappy with that. It might take another cleaning or a total carb rebuild. The Honda outboard Dealer that rebuilt my carbs said his mechanics hate to work on engines with carbs.. said the Honda carbs can be difficult to get clean and something about carb parts getting cracks in them?? If you can, go to the link i provided for the Honda Outboard Forum and post your problem there, there are guys there that are pretty sharp.

Idle jets are very small and easily clogged. Unless the mechanic took the idle jets out and cleaned them it probably won’t idle right. The new age mechanics just run an IV Bottle with carb cleaner thru them and say they are clean. They are synchronized thru the linkage with no adjustment to the carb.
You should always run the 4 strokes at WOT for a few minutes before getting to the ramp and loading.
This will prevent carbon build up on top of cylinders and also problems you are having. Lugging a 4 stroke all day is bad for them.
Just my opinion from running 4 strokes for 20+ years or more.
