Look at shift leaver on motor and see if it could possibly be installed upside down.
I have a Johnson 50 hp from 1974 that puked a rod and put a hole in the block. So I put a 55hp from 1978 on the lower unit and everything bolted up and looked fine. I took it out for a test drive and the control works backward, forward is reverse and reverse is forward. Other than that it works fine. Runs 30 mph on my 15 foot Boat.
Is there a way to fix this without replace the control?
Thanks

The linkage only goes together one way so that didn't help. The lower unit is green and model number 50ESL74M and the power head is a 55EL79.Anyone have any ideas how to change the controller so reverse is reverse and forward is forward
Bob, did you use an existing linkage that was attached to the power head you installed. If you did do you still have access to old power head. It about has to be in that linkage I don’t know of any way to change it in shifter box.

no I don't have the old power head. I'll have to see if I can find some old linkage.
