Default 2000 Mercury 40hp 4 stroke starting after warm problems

I have a 2000 Mercury 40hp 4 stroke on a 2000 Tracker Panfish that will crank on the first turn of the key. It will run fine for as long as you want to run it. Once you stop to fish, It doesn't want to crank right back up. I have to turn it over for quite a while before it will fire. I have replaced the fuel filter and the fuel line and bulb. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Could you give me the model number off the motor? And are you sure it’s not later than a 2000 model?

Check this diagram on vapor separator. Number 17 is a strainer that could be restricting flow, also check the float Assyrian. I know they have had a recall on some motors for it sticking and causing problems. That is also a high pressure electric fuel pump that supplies high pressure fuel to injectors. Figure out which is discharge line to check pump flow when it won’t start, but be careful to disconnect line because it could be under pressure. Or better yet with cowl off put a long stick or something against the vapor separator housing and to your ear, then have someone turn key on to see if pump is running. Need to do this after it has gotten hot and won’t crank. Want to see if pump is running. It is controlled by float. If float is sticking it won’t let fuel in and pump could be running dry.

I would suggest taking it to a shop. You can create more costly issues than what you might already have if you aren't familiar with the system and how it works. From what you've described, it sounds like a problem with the IAC but cray could be on to something with fuel supply.
    I'd rather be fishing.

Just out of curiosity have you changed water pumps lately could be getting too hot when running and causing issues.

My friends was doing the same thing. When it won't crank, pull the hull and feel of a little tank on the right down low as you are looking at the motor. If it is hot, can be too hot to hold your hand on it, pour water on it until it is cool and see if it will crank. We worried with that motor for 2 years trying to figure it out. If that works, there is a fuel pump inside the tank. We replaced it and problem solved. It isn't a hard to replace. This has fixed several motors for guys I told about it.
I know it sounds stupid and that's what I thought the first time he told me to pour water on it. I thought it was a joke.
