Default How hard is it to cut a trolling motor shaft?

I'm wanting the 48 inch model of a minn kota they stopped making last year. I found a reconditioned 48 inch one but I don't know if I want to do that or not. They are all 55 inch now. I could get new and cut.

    What model?
I'm sure you are aware but just in case, you dont have to sink the whole TM 55" into the water, Other than deck space, whats wrong with the length?

Powerdrive. Yes, deck space is the issue. When not crappie fishing is rare and I have someone else in the boat it might get in the way.

Yes you can, understand if brand new and you have a issue and tell sevice facility they might void your warranty. Now take head off and disconnect wires, slide another piece of pvc that will fit into shaft over the wires and down past where you are going to cut. That will insure you don’t Nick the wires. Then just put back together pushing excess wire down into shaft gently as you can.

As Cray said make sure and mark the holes that hold the head on for lining back up or the head and motor will not be straight.

    looks easy enough. YouTube
Dont forget the power steering models hang past the bow about 5 inches.

I went ahead and got the 48 inch. Hopefully I will not have to cut.

I would also like to add to turn the shaft at angle where the debris don't go down the shaft into the motor. Also would recommend a pipe cutter rather than saw blade. also be mindful of extra needed for wind chop and the odd occasion it's just you and you want to fish from the back. But the actual job of cutting it is easy.

If you use a hacksaw, put a hose clamp on it where you cut to keep your cut square.

I cut my Motorguide down, and had to find a machine shop to rethread a side of the piece I cut. It was a chore, and I can't really tell you exactly the steps I took, or what I did. It was one of those projects that I figured it out as I did it, but had to do it if I was going to have the trolling motor. My finances as a minister keep me in the "Craigslist and Fix It" world. It's worked well for the past 7 years!!!
