If that's the two choices I get the Merc....But if they'll hang a Zuk on it...that's what I'd have.

When I see a post like this I recall when A good friend of mine use to be the service manager of a large marina in Va. Beach. (He may still be) Anyway he was asked this question many times and had a standard answer. He would tell them if you want to go far, buy an Evinrude. If you want to go fast, buy a Merc. If you want to go far and fast, buy a Yamaha. That was a long time ago so I don't know if its still true or not or even if it was back then.
I know Mercury is the most popular, with that said,I have a 1980 100HP Evinrude don't know the hours on it, but I got it from a guy cleaning out a shed a few years ago. Other that a tune up and water pump I haven't had any trouble out of it. They didn't know how long it laid in that shed.

I have a 91 & 93 Evinrude motors and they are good engines no doubt. Yours like mine were the old OMC motors and were very reliable and well built. OMC went under in 2000 and was taken over by Bombardier. I wouldn't hesitate to own any old Evinrude/ Johnson motor that are pre FICHT era engines.

I'd take the Etec over the Merc, and a Yamaha or Zuke over both of them.
Merc has a terrible reputation of discontinuing parts, and stuff you can get can be outrageously expensive.
I like the 7yr. warranty and I think Suzuki offers 6yr.
Software for etec gen2 is only available for rude dealers and everyone I've talked to said they don't know if or when it will be released. I'd see what each warranty , covers. As said above parts are not cheap. I replaced this oil tank on motor 2005 merc. optima today , tank our cost $ 207.00
Am I correct when you say "software not released" means you can`t buy after market/online parts unless you go through a dealer correct? So basically anything that has to be done must go back to the dealer?
This is much harder than I thought to select a motor, the boat comes from the factory with no motor or controls, dealer installs them so that makes it nice for me but really makes my decision hard because there seems to be so many issues to address, I think I`m just over thinking this?
Where are the Evinrude dealers if I go to ky Lake fishing or Dale Hollow lake? I know there are Mercury dealers everywhere it seems but not sure about Evinrude dealers but they do have a much better warranty, so there you go ??
Thanks Steve
