How man guys use them? How important are they? What's a recommendation for a kit?
Motor is a 2008 Mercury optimax 2 stroke 75 hp.
No issues to my knowledge. I do use what I assume/marketed non ethanol gas. And the motor gets constant use.
Thanks

I too used the kit from Walmart.....I mix marine stabile with my fuel and change the water separator filter every year and clean the main fuel filter every year....have had no problems.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I agree with G and am a firm believer in Stabile also.

I have had good luck with Seafoam. Boat sat for 4 years due to work. Drained carbs, drained tank, ran a gallon of gas throught the motor mixed heavily with Seafoam to clean the carbs some. Runs as good as before it was stored. I need to put a filter separator on it

How important they are depends on your perspective. After getting gas with water in it, or gas getting water in it somehow while in my boat, I had a fishing trip basically ruined by a poorly running boat. No way I'd go without one now.
This is a link to the exact one that I installed on my boat. I have it under the back deck, obviously between the tank and the motor. If I had a video of what I poured out of the filter when I changed it late spring this past year, you'd all buy one. LOL

I did buy one .... a Moeller but with the clear bottom w/drain spigot ... with every intention of putting it on my boat. Problem was ... it was so big that it wouldn't fit anywhere it needed to be without being in the way of my onboard charger or the need for some added framework supports (which also would have been "in the way"). Even then the gas line would be S curved such that it probably would have required a new, longer line to keep from being pinched & restrict the flow of gas.
I use Seafoam .... and sometimes I don't run a tank of gas out in a year, and in fact the gas I ran the other day was over a year old (& the boat sat idle for nearly 4 months) and she fired up and ran just like normal. When it's stored thru the Winter months, it's topped off with gas & a bottle of Seafoam .... no problems come time to take her out for the first time that year. (Motor is a 1999 90HP Mercury 2strk)
Change my filter yearly & add Seafoam to every tank. 90hp Mercury 2-stroke
I don't have one. Just use the filter on the outboard, I usually dump it when I change the lower unit oil. I also run through a tank of gas about once a month, and the boat seldom sits very long.
For those that pre-mix, most quality 2 stroke oils already contain stabilizers, so there's really not a huge need to use a separate additive.
If the boat sits for a long time outdoors, even covered, and has a big tank, a water separator is a good idea IMO.
It is in a non heated/insulated garage. And yeah I usually fill it after every trip. Seems weird I know but I seem to have more time coming home than headed fishing at dark30.
