Have you checked oil for fuel smell? Maybe drain and check for fuel. A pump draining fuel into case will wash the pistons down and cause galling of cylinder or worse. You would use oil also, as the oil will seep past the rings from being too thin. Check the oil for fuel soon if you haven't already.
