    Default Stainless Question For Metallurgist

I hope I don't sound like a techy geek, but I have a strange question and I'm just curious what's going on; I've installed many things with stainless bolts and nuts. On occasion, the stainless nut will freeze on the stainless bolt before I can get it tight. I learned my lesson and always use water or antiseize compound to prevent that.

Why does stainless hardware seize? Is it a chemical reaction from a coating on the hardware?

    Thanks,

    JW

Just a guess here but same type metals(nuts/bolts) have a better chance of seizing than using different types of metals. Yes I agree that the stainless on stainless requires an anti seize compound to help prevent seizing up more so than other types of metals.
