I forgot about this thread. But i did check out all the other possibilities before i pulled the lower unit off. And i would NEVER pull it off without replacing the impeller. It did the trick, peed instantly when cranked. I have changed my 9.9 yamaha before and it wasn't bad except i also damaged the rubber boot 40$ but everything slid on and off nicely. This 60 was different. I didn't realize in was so hard to get the impeller in the housing. then took 45 minutes (with some breaks of course) to get the shaft to line up and the unit seated. Glad i did it. no telling how much $ i saved. I will eventually check the fuel enrichment system. I don't think it works. When cold i have to turn it to emergency open to start it. Been this way the whole 7 years i had the boat. That will be another day but i suspect the switch is not energizing it.

I've got a 90 Yamaha I fought with last year. A Yamaha mechanic told me the easy way to get the impeller in the housing. Coat it with vegetable oil and turn driveshaft clockwise while pushing down on top housing. It popped right in. Also fought hard start for 3 years. Had to use the bypass every time I cold started it. Turned out my fuel bulb was the problem. Replaced it and starts fine now.

I used vegetable oil but didn’t see the advice on turning the shaft till after I got it back on. I took a lunch break and watched videos trying to find a trick on getting the lower unit back on and saw it there.

I was about to change my impeller on the water pump because I was not getting water out of the tube also. Still nothing at the thermostat, and the tube was clear. I had opened the valve to the hose fully, I was flooding the yard. Closing the valve to where the valve was only cracked the motors water pump started working properly.
