Default Three wires to the trolling motor???

My Express came with 3 wires running from the battery compartment to a trolling motor plug. One red, one orange and one black. I can't figure out what that 3rd wire would be used for. Granted, I'm no electrician but.....

    Any ideas?

Would that choice not be made at the battery or batteries?

How many trolling motor batteries are in boat. Sometimes switch on bow will have setting for 12 v to allow 12v charger to charge 24 v system. How are batteries hooked up . If neg connected to pos by jumper is 24v. If pos to pos is 12 v. What voltage is trolling motor.

I ran new wires to mine because I went to a 36 v but mine was wired just like yours for 24v and it had the switch up front like beshears mentioned.

There were no TM batteries in the back when I bought the boat. The former owner had placed one battery in the front deck compartment and had a 12 volt TM on the boat.

    I'm installing a 24 volt 80lb TM tomorrow.

That is old style wiring harness for old motors that could be run on 12 volts or 24. Just eliminate orange wire.

The three wires are for a trolling motor that will operate on either 12 volts or 24 volts. 12/24 volt motors have a switch to choose which you want. Thus the third wire to send power to the 24 volt side of the switch. The red and black wires operate the 12 volt side. You only need the red and black wires if you are using a straight 24 volt motor with the batteries hooked in series.

Thanks guys. I’ve never seen that configuration before.

Mitchell, I got new 6 gauge wires to run for my trolling motor. This factory wires were only 10 gauge
