Check the primer for proper operation.
Hi Fellas,
I've got an 08 Yamaha 50 two stroke that is giving me trouble starting. When I get to the lake, I can pump my bulb, and to get it started, I have to turn it overrrrrrrrrrr for a long time for it to finally fire. Once I get it started and warmed up, it starts fine the rest of the day. I thought is was my external fuel filter, so I bypassed it. I bought a new tank, and an new hose, thinking maybe that was the problem.....no luck. I'm out of ideas. I would think that if it was the fuel pump, it would give me trouble all of the time. Once I get it cranked, it runs fine, all the way through idle to wide open throttle. One thing I have always noticed, this motor has to be trimmed all the way down for it to start the first time. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Barry

Check the red lever located to the port side of the middle carb. There should be a diagram showing it's position for "off", "auto" and "on". Make sure it's in auto. If it is, place it in the "on" position the next time you are ready to cold start your motor. If the motor starts much quicker, move the lever back to auto before the motor begins to flood. If you have to move the lever to "on", take it to a shop and have them check the circuit and the solenoid that functions the enrichener. If it was found to be in the "off" position, moving it to "auto" should correct the problem.

Thanks Bill. I put a brand new hose and primer bulb. That didn't help. It's like this motor is just extremely cold natured. Once I get it started, it's good to go the rest of the day with just a touch of the key.
Sliderman, I thought you might be on to something, as soon as I read your reply, I was like, "that's got to be it"! But, unfortunately that wasn't it. This motor has the red lever, but it only has two positions, open or closed, and according to my owners manual, it should normally be in the closed position. I'm going to the lake in the morning, and I'm going to try to choke it manually with the red lever. If it fires up, I'll know its my automatic choke.......I think
Can you post a pic of it?

I was having the same problem with my 60 Mariner. After talking with a mechanic, he said there was a ball valve in the auto oiler that would stick and allow oil to fill carb bowls when left sitting too long. He replaced it and problem gone.
Does it smoke a lot when you finally get it cranked?
The oiler on the yamaha is true oil injection and doesn't suffer that problem. But that's a not so uncommon problem among the Mercury/Mariners.
