    Default Water Separator

Getting ready to install a water separator/fuel filter on a boat I'm restoring. My question is , do I install the priming bulb on entering or leaving side of filter? I've read articles that conflict each other about location. It would make sense to me to install before filter , that way filter could be primed with bulb. However , most installers put filter before primer bulb. They cannot give me a good reason why though. Just want to get it right the first time . Anyone have any experience on this ?

My filter is before the primer also...it does just fine .....matter of fact the instructions with my water separator filter said to do it that way.

Before the primer bulb : otherwise you'd have to put the filter outside the bilge area or open the bilge area to get to the primer bulb. (unless your boat is totally "open" in the transom area).

The primer bulb will suck gas out of the tank & into the filter when you squeeze it (from either side of the filter), either by pushing it to or pulling it from the filter. Biggest obstacle is finding a place for the filter, where it can be mounted securely and out of the way, plus not put much of a bend/kink in the fuel hose (which may restrict flow of gas). You'll probably need a few hose clamps and may even need an additional length of fuel line (in case you can't route the gas line you already have, without binding it ... or if it's too short to reach the filter where you have to place it).

Any "cutting" you have to do, whether it's on the old gas line or a new one ... "flush" them out real good with air or gas, before hooking them up. Tiny particles of the gas line "can" get into the hose, and may eventually end up in the carb jets. That happened to me, and I had to take the carbs off & have them cleaned ... and tiny pieces of rubber from the new hose had clogged up the jets (the mechanic showed them to me).

On my G3 1648 jon, dealer installed primer bulb before the filter. Works great.

Thanks for the input guys . Bulb access seems to be the main reason for installing primer after filter. I've never had a water separator before so I didn't know how hard it would be to get a new filter primed w/primer bulb on leaving side of filter.

When you get it all installed and ready to prime, hold the bulb vertically with the arrow pointing up. It makes it much easier to get the filter full.

Fill the filter full of gas before screwing it on the base. Will save you a bunch of pumping.
