Never done one of those CP but one I did took more pressure than you would have thought to get it to shift. Try rotating prop while trying to shift it. I think your correct on the magnet.
Neighbor replaced impeller and had to put in neutral to do so. Now, he needs to pt it in reverse to get it back together on the boat. It was in reversed (recommended) when he removed it. Now, the question is: how hard is this thing to get to shift? I done a 35, butv never a 115. How much pressure is needed to sift it in reverse before installing back on engine housing? I don't wanna break anything. Suggestions needed urgently. Almost dark here. ha
Also found a spiral spring with a magnet in it. It was stuck to the side of the lower unit casing. What the heck? Dooon't see it on any assembly drawing. Metal particle collecter maybe?
Thanks
Tom

Tried that spinning the prop. No luck. Nothing was done to the shifter, so I don't understand why I can't get it in reverse. Maybe tap the shift rod with a block of wood and hammer method?
I don't understand that spring being loose in the lower unit at all.

The spring magnet device is shaped like the end of a plumber hand cranked rooter.

How did he get it in neutral if it was in reverse. He should not have had to change it to install pump, just grasp the shaft and turn it to set impeller bottom end would have turned. I don't understand the sprig either unless someone dropped it in there before. If all else fails whack it.
I believe the spring was left by a previous mechanic. May have been fishing for a dropped piece and broke off the magnet retrieve piece. I see no evidence of metal in the oil though. One of those confusing things in life I guess. No way that mag spring belongs in the lower unit. I have given the exploded view of the lower unit thorough viewing. No way.
Neighbor took this unit apart without me there. He claims he didn't remove the shift arm. I am just the bucket of bolts guy. Who knows what really transpired.

Here is your diagram. Shows shifter parts. 13/14/15 are the parts you see looking into it. 47 is shift rod that should work up and down to move the linkage. And if you notice that spring and magnet are listed with a part number and supposed to be there. Thinking you would pull up on that leaver to shift to reverse.

That is it. It was loose inside so I was told. I don't see where it is on Crays diagram. Which item. I am dense.Originally Posted by G";3438411]Yep....Spring and magnet....... [URL="http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0380375

I found the item, but where does it go or fit, etc. Back where it came from, stuck to the wall of the housing. If so, what it for except what I first thought, a filing catcher. Geeeeez.
