    Default Draw bar debate

I have been reading a couple discussions on draw bars. The question is... can drop draw bars be flipped to become a riser without jeopardizing strength or safety. Wow, the opinions vary every bit as much as a Donald vs Hillary discussion. What say you?

I take it this is the draw bar(trailer hitch)on the back of your truck and not a tractor draw bar. I have used them flipped a lots of times with different trucks to get the trailer higher and also to lower the trailer tongue. It should make no difference as far as the strength of the draw bar it is made strong to pull the weight and they do have the max. weight wrote on them most of the time. A lot of people don't really understand that really the weight on the draw bar(trailer hitch) should not be very heavy the load should be mostly on the axles and tires of the trailer. No more than 10% to 15% of total trailer weight should be on the tongue.

No not a tractor bar, truck. I agree with you scrat. Some are arguing that the weld strength reacts differently with the orientation of the bar. I assume that the weld is the same weld no matter which way you position it. Just like a soda straw does the same job no matter which end you suck on!

Think you would find that those who argue that point have no knowledge of welding or metelurgy what so ever. If you have a truck strong enough and a load heavy enough to break that weld your way over powered and overloaded. I can pull a 53 ft trailer with 40,000 lbs using a tractor with 600-800 hp all coupled with a king pin with not much more weld than your hitch and it dosnt break off so I wouldn't worry to much.

Yes you flip them either way if the weld breaks then the weld was bad to start with

Cray what kinda engine makes 800hp? That's almost double my 460.I could get an extra load a day with that HP.

Most bars state right on them the drop dimension and the rise if flipped.

The early late 80's green detroits could easy be 800. Lot of there 500 base motors would do over 600 out the box on a chassis dyno. Watched my buddy at Freightliner dealer in NW Arkansas put a PAM truck on their dyno and pull almost 900 after someone had tweaked the computer a little. Problem was in those days most clutches, transmissions, drive lines and rearends wouldn't handle it for long. When I worked at Cummins dealer in late 90's we actually had programs in our computer to set those big red motors that high but it was all for off road or foreign engines. None of those programs would meet EPA specs here. If you found the right guy you might be surprised what you can get out of your 460 if you wanted to start buying a lot of parts. It would take that extra load to pay for fuel and parts. And on this note we have successfully hijacked this mans post on hitches. My apologies Silverside.
