    Default Best Transom Saver ?

I have a 04 Johnson 70hp 4 stroke, 350lb+ about to go to paint booth...
(expensive paint job). Does anyone know of a transom saver that doesn't scratch paint?? Every saver I've ever owned scratched!! Thanks in advance.

If your motor has auto trim, this might work?

I've used the Attwood Adjustable one, and the Attwood Heavy Duty one, and neither one has scratched the motor (when correctly attached). These both are for trailers that have the rubber roller at the rear center.

On the Attwood Heavy Duty one, I have had the rubber grip caps wear off ... and the rivet that holds them on have scratched the motor. BUT, they wore off because I was putting the motor into them wrong. The right way is to put the rubber grip end against the lower unit & then trim the motor down ... while guiding the roller grip end onto the roller, and only until it's snug tight. Then put the rubber strap around the lower unit.

The way I was previously doing it (wrong) was putting the roller grip end on the roller and trimming the motor down into the rubber cap end. And probably trimming it down way too tight. This put a lot of stress on the rubber caps & mashed & twisted them, until one finally came off ... leaving the bent rivet exposed and against the motor. Had I known about them, before that happened, I could have purchased a replacement toggle & just replaced the one with the missing rubber cap. But, I received a brand new one as a Christmas present, so I put it on & am keeping the old one for spare parts.

    Here's what I'm talking about :

I personally use the Attwood heavy duty one and the four smaller rubber pads seems to scratch a lot less than the one with two rubberized composite duckbill jaws. Like CP mentioned, a lot of boaters (myself included) tend to put a lot more pressure than is necessary on the transom saver and that increased fore will eat up your finish a lot faster on your lower unit. If you don't want the type mounted to the trailer, I know some guys in Lunds up north that use the m-y wedge that fits over the tilt/trim piston and does not interact wit the lower unit directly. They also make it rebadged with the Yamaha logo for sale by Yamaha outboard dealers.

I'll take a second look at the Atwood HD. My trailer is designed for pin in style , but I may be able to modify it , or buy a short bow roller. The way my bunks are set up I only have room for a 4" roller. They are hard to find w/ bracket. I can't really see how the stabilizer style that go in tilt cylinder, take any pressure off transom. Maybe I'm wrong though. Anybody got any experience with them?

Attwood HD transom savers come in "universal" (roller & pin styles). They have a model that has this on the end, instead of the C shaped deal that goes over the roller :

I believe they come with both styles of ends in the same pkg, but I'd research that further to be sure. I'm thinking they do, because I have the bolt & the cotter pin safety device from my old HD ... and I don't remember buying the safety pin deal separately. My new one did not have the safety pin deal or the bracket shown in the picture (just the bolt) ... so that's why I say research it further. And I say that because the bracket/bolt/pin thingy can be bought on eBay for around $20 :

So it might save you some $$ to get the model or deal that includes it in the package.
