Default '96 Johnson 150 - Initial status lights on Tach not working

    Hey All,

I have to say that this forum has already saved me a boatload (pun intended) of money by being able to DIY a lot of my boat/engine troubles. Thanks a lot!

So i'm slowly getting everything working on the boat and have a couple more issues that are lingering. The biggest and my current project is to figure out why the initial beeps and status light when I turn the ignition key are no longer happening on the Tachometer. It used to beep, then have 4 red lights count down. It no longer does that when I turn the key, although the motor turns over and starts fine. I'm worried that this means the fault alarms arent operable for the engine and I'm going to kill something if there is an issue (namely VRO failure).

So slight history. It was working fine, I disconnected battery and the key was turned, I heard a slight pop come from the engine (like something shorting) and now it no longer works. It was either that or I hooked the lead to the wrong side of the battery terminal. I can't remember

Thought on how to fix this?

I would say the latter of the two, your going to have to suck up to an OMC mechanic somewhere that may have a system check gauge or tach that you can plug in to see it the lights come back, the self test on the warning horn well that's only good for maybe 30 seconds of being on, so when it ran out of gas the alarm should have gone off, and after a short time the horn melts. The two work together but are not one in the same, need to find the gauge to test it, don't go buy one as its $150.00 or better and no one will take a return on electronic parts

There is an in line fuse on the engine that could have blown.

If fuse was blown motor wouldn't crank but if you want to check it remove the cowling, on the starter side there is a black plastic cover that all the wiring goes through, fuse is inside a boot with red wire going in and coming out, hence the won't crank, won't trim, red wire is the power supply to the key switch and also supplies power to the trim switches on the motor and at the shifter

Took boat out last night and ran the hell out of it at WOT for a solid 45 mins. Motor capped at 4K RPM, but that's a separate problem, most likely one or more of my carbs aren't working right. The engine didn't overheat and no alarms sounded. What's weird is that at first my tach showed no action, but after about 10 mins it all of a sudden starts registering my RPMs....still no status lights at startup though..

Tach problem could be the contacts inside the tach. Look at the back of the tach there is adjustment for different engine set ups. Note where it is set take a screw driver and work it back and forth many times this is enough to clean up the contacts. None of these gauges are sealed and why don`t ask me so corrosion can be an issue.

Now here is another problem, running a motor ,V-6 at WOT with a plugged up carb is asking for major problems, the carb that is not getting enough gas into the cylinder is also restricting oil, there for no lubrication, and scored cylinders and stuck rings melted pistons are what usually follows. I would bite the bullet, and rebuild or at least clean carbs and high speed jets before your asking how to remove and rebuild a V-6

Thanks for reply archer. I'll have to google how to remove the carbs and clean em out. If I'm going to take them off I might as well buy the rebuild kits and replace everything.

Think I might be at the point that I take it to the boat mechanic and let him fix it up. My time is probably worth much more than I would have paid a mechanic by now lol
