Have same problem on my boat. Took trim tab apart and it was rusted contacts. I stripped wires back a little and resoldered the contacts and works fine now

Past couple of times I've noticed my trim isn't working at the console. It's always the up not the down. I can get on the back and move the engine controls up then back to the console and it will work again. Most times I can trim it up at the motor then while moving it won't trim up again. Any ideas?

Check all your connections to the relays. If good try swapping the relays.

Sounds similar to the problem I had (but in reverse). My t/t would "act up" now & then, and not want to move the motor down unless I flipped the switch on the motor to raise it & then quickly flip the switch to the down position. Worked fine when in the water for trimming up/down ... just didn't want to trim down when trying to put the motor into the transom saver bar.
When it finally wouldn't trim down at all, but would trim up ... I pulled the relays and swapped them out with each other, and sure enough it would trim down but not up. Bad relay !! Went to local marine dealer & got two new relays for about $16/ea and replaced the old relays. Motor is a 1999 Merc 90HP 2strk.
I had seen online where the relays could be taken out & opened up & checked for corrosion around the plugs ... and clean them off with a dremel or sandpaper ... and put them back together & back into the motor and they worked fine. But, for the price I paid for them, and had brand new relays ... and one good spare ... I figured I came out on the better (& much easier) end of the deal.

If the one on motor always works but dash works intermittent then I'm going to say you have a bad connection from front switch back to where it connects to another wire or the relay. Pull dash switch and check connection for corrosion or being loose. You can check operation just by touching the up and down wires to the hot lead going to switch. Could just have a bad switch. Do the easy things first.
Thanks guys. I'll check the connections at the throttle first. Then the relays if the switch doesn't pan out. I appreciate all the replies and will post the results later.
Does it make any sense to anyone when I say it never fails when it's on the trailer. Maybe a grounding issue?

I had similar problems on my crappie magnum a few years ago. I could trim both ways using the switches at the motor, but sometimes couldn't trim up from the throttle, could always trim down from the throttle. Turned out the problem was dirty contacts on the switch in the throttle handle at the toggle switch. I got some contact cleaner and sprayed in the gaps around the switch from outside the throttle handle (was to lazy to take the thing apart and maybe break something) figuring nothing ventured nothing gained. It worked, and I didn't have any further problems with the trim.
