Default 5.5 hp evinrude oil mix

This outboard is a 1960 5.5 hp fisherman and all information that I can find for that year says to mix the oil at 24/1,when i do it will run very good but It will smoke very bad.I have cut it back to30/1 mix.and so far have not had any problems yet, still smokes but I know its being lubercated. Does any one know without a doute, I can switch to a 50/1 mix with these newer oils, and not hurt this engine at all.I will keep using this mix at 30/1 until I know for sure it will work.then ican use the same mix in both outboards, and not be afraid of getting the fuel with the 50/1 mix and using it on the 5.5hp....

24/1 was the mix back in the day when SAE 30 was the oil of choice because there was no two cycle oil like we have today, I have seen and run the older motors on TCW 3 oil but recomended to people who own them to run one pint to 5 gal instead of six, yes it smokes more and may foul plugs faster at idle but the crank main bearings are not like modern roller bearings and a little extra oil can go a long way to keeping the older motors running strong for a long long time

Should be more than safe to run at 50/1. Like has already been stated, the oils have changed, not the motor.
    I'd rather be fishing.

That may be true, but Im still afraid because of the lack of roller bearings on the crank shaft,Im still going to run a richer oil mix in that engine.cause I dont want to take any chanchs on an outboard that old. Just got through replacing both coils, new plug wires, plugs timed it and rebuilt carbs.Replaced impeller, got it running good so I cant take that chanch.may Im im scared for no reason....
