I have the same motor only mine is 1998. Several years ago I changed to NGK plugs and it messed up the power pack. It started running terrible and I had to replace the power pack to fix it. The power pack is designed to work with the proper resistance of the Champion plugs only. Went back to the Champions QL78YC and never had another problem.

Stick with the Champion QL77YC plugs recommended by OMC. My 94 came with QL77JC4 and swapped them to the QL77YC after reading some traffic on a marine forum, couldn't tell a difference.
