A 2 position battery switch solves problems like you describe.
However, running 2 batteries of equal size, date and same mamma in parallel will provide a longer run time. Peukert's Law (physics 201).
I have these 2 batteries that I need to run in sequence. How do I tell if they're the same type (AGM/wet cell/etc)? Can I use these together?

from the letters on them I'd guess one is a "D" Deep cycle the other is a "S" Start battery, not a good mix in my book

Do you mean series or parallel? If series, the batteries will last roughly as long as two of the smaller batteries.
If you really want to learn, get off here and get to googling about hooking batteries together correctly

It looks like you have a group 24 and a group 27.....When wireing two batteries in parallel for 12 volt it is recommended that both batteries be the same brand....same group type...and the same age...same everything. If not the weaker battery will bring the better one down to its level and the life of both will be shortened.
The battery in your top picture is a group 27 wet cell deep cycle dual purpose battery......the one in the second picture is a group 24 starting battery its not a deep cycle. I do not recommend hooking those two batterys together.

Thanks for the replies. I think what i'll do is use 1 till it dies then just move the wires to the other battery, at least till I can buy 2 just alike.

Just be careful with the terminology. Two 12 volts in series yields 24 volts, not what you want if your motor is 12 volts. Parallel is how you wire them for a 12 volt motor.
In our RV I did wire 2 heavy duty 6 volt golf cart batteries in series to run our 12 volt items and the difference in run time was remarkable compared to the two 27 Interstates I was running. The 6 volts were Interstate too, by the way.
