Question Evinrude 40hp 1995 shift rod length?

This weekend I rebuild my lower unit and need the shift rod length from lower unit mounting plate to center of shift rod hole. I can find it for motors prior to 81 but haven't been able to locate the information for my 1995 Evinrude 2 stroke 40 hp (small gearcase) E40TELEOD motor.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Last season she would pop out of gear under light load. Research pointed me toward the clutch dog. While disassembling I noticed water in the lower unit and very little oil. Lower unit seals must be replaced. Figured since I was here, replace the water pump, complete kit. Got the clutch dog out, and sure enough to top 1/8" of the clutch dog teeth were rounded over. Maybe a 1/16" of the forward gear showed the similar wear. Bought a new clutch dog and ground the forward gear teeth down to clean up that edge, maintained the back-cut. Anyway, I forgot to record the shift linkage measurement before I unscrewed it from the gear case. The repair manual I have doesn't specify the dimension, gives very little information about rebuilding the lower unit. Great detail on the water pump, and some detail on lower unit seals, but nothing on reassemble of the lower unit or the shift linkage adjustment.

Here is a complete parts breakdown of your gear case.

It gives two dimensions - 15" & 20" - short and long shaft lower units.

You can go one level up and get all the parts for each assembly

Thanks. However that is not the information I need. I know the length of my lower unit, what I don't know is the measurement for the shift linkage. The shift linkage screws in and must be X height from the top of the lower unit. I need to know what X is. I have already ordered new parts. Without X I can't get the adjustment correct.

I did find the problem for it popping out of forward gear. Soon as the video finishes uploading to youtube I'll add it.

    21 29/32 - 21 31/32 is the spec.
    I'd rather be fishing.

Update. Most of the lower unit is back together. tomorrow I should have time to work on it some more. I ended up buying the Evinrude repair manual. Great resource and full of all the right information, better than the Selock version I had. All I have to install is the water pump and that shouldn't take too long, it's brand new. Then slide the lower unit home and bolt it and the shift linkage in place.

I also am replacing the worn out hydraulic lift assist piston with a lever lock version, took a sawzall and several hours to remove the top pin. Must replace the tiller handle as part of the upgrade.

I bought a used Terrova and 898c SI sonar unit tonight. I need to mount boht of them and then link them to my 899. I also need to swap transducers. The 898 comes with the up HD SI transducer which is the upgrade for the 899. Since the 898 is going on the bow I will attach the compact si transducer to it via the trolling motor. I got the link and will attach the GPS puck and both sonar units to the link. Should be able to share the GPS, data, waypoints.

Boat MUST be ready for a crappie tournament next weekend. Hoping to get it out on the water Sunday. Lots to do tomorrow. The grandkids are coming over tomorrow too.

    Update:
As is typical for me, marathon work to get the boat ready for the tournament. I was up until 1:30am Friday night and had to be up at 4.30am to leave for the tournament. Never did get the motor tested prior to the tournament.

Going into the first HOI Crappie Tournament of the year in a boat with unproven electronics, trolling motor and main motor. Quick rundown of the upgrades and work involved.

Trollling Motor- used MinnKota Terrova 80 pound thrust 24volt system with I-Pilot. Had to repair a broken bolt on the motor, install the SI transducer (run the cable up the shaft in the notch), and install a 2nd group 31 battery. Which meant reconfiguring the battery storage area. Moved the cranking battery out of the battery compartment and put it in the anchor compartment. Anchor gone, replaced by SpotLock on the trolling motor. Went from a 12volt system to a 24volt system.

Electronics- Mount the used 898 on the bow, includes the GPS puck, and all the wiring. Plus run Ethernet cable back to the 899 at the counsel. Installed the HD SI transducer on the transom, mounted a new mounting board for it. Put the mounting board on the starboard side, where it should be. Last 'ducer was mounted on the port side, where the old mounting board was located. This gave me a line through my sonar image.

40hp Evinrude- Installed the rebuilt lower unit, put the starter back (had to be removed to access the shift linkage connection). Installed the used hydraulic assist system. Couldn't figure out how to run the lever lock cable and it was approaching midnight. Couldn't get the tilt assist to release and couldn't remove the top pin. Took the cable off and removed the bottom pin and went with it. Manual lift requires two feet on the transom to lift, not my idea of a good time. Still need to figure out the path that cable takes.

Load boat gear, fishing gear, etc. shower and bed. 4.30 came mighty early.

Tournament- Rained the entire 1 1/2 hour drive to the boat ramp. Quit raining about time I got to the ramp. Was nervous about the boat. Untested motor, untested trolling motor. Pretty much the last one to launch by plan. Got the boat in the water, primed the engine and she pur'd to life. then promptly died. Primed again and fired right up. Threw it in gear and idled to the dock. All good so far. Tied up at the dock I dropped the trolling motor to test her out. It got juice, I could turn the head, but no power. Finally hit the right button on the I-Pilot remote and the motor jumped to life. Awesome, now to figure out what the button did and how to turn the motor off.

Time to head out- partner and I loaded up and took off. Motor ran great, never once popped out of gear. Got to our first destination and the trolling motor worked well. Still took some time to figure out the controls. Hole #1, not very productive. Moved to another spot and tried out spot lock in 5-10mph winds. Awesome tool. I was most impressed with spotlock on the 4th hole. We were in 20 mph sustained winds and the motor held us within 10'=15' of the spot. We did bounce from side to side some but nothing that we couldn't compensate for with our flip casting. We also pulled our biggest Crappie out of this spot. 11" fish. Then it started to drizzle and wind kicked it up a notch. Time to move. We found a nice calm cover with no fish.
Moment of truth- how did we do? Ended up less than a pound out of 1st place. Finished in 10th place out of 21 boats.

It was a great day. The 40hp worked well, the TM worked well, and the both the 898 and 899 did great.

Things left to do. Ethernet connect the 898 and 899, and figure out the tilt assist cable. I'll keep you posted.

Spent some time on the boat again today. Fishing plans got busted to help youngest clean out some stuff from his house so he can put it up for sale. Fishing in the am though.

I installed the tilt lever lock handle and cable today. Seemed more complicated than it actually was. My 40 only came with the tilt assist cylinder, never a lever lock to hold position. Required swapping out the handle/throttle linkage. Installed the new piston and hooked up the cable. Everything works in the garage. Motor is a little slow to raise and lower then I would like. However I ain't messing with it until I use it a few times.

Also installed a 50 amp self-resetting circuit breaker for the trolling motor too.

Now I just need to figure out how to make my 898 and 899 speak to each other via the Ethernet link.

Spent some time on the water today pre-fishing for an upcoming tournament. It was cold and rainy so we didn't fish much. Mostly trolled around recording so I can make a map of the lake. This lake doesn't have a contour map and the only way to get one is to make one yourself. Did manage to drown a few minnows and pulled out a decent Bass with a minnow under a slip bobber.

As for the boat. Worked great. Finally coming together nicely.
Tilt assist lever lock system worked great. One day I may invest in a bigger motor with electric tilt/trim. One day.
80# trust 24v Terrova trolling motor worked great. Cranked that sucker up to 10 most of the day and still had a full charge on my group 31 batteries. Which is a good thing. This lake has a 25 hp limit and I have a 40hp. So I am on trolling motor only on for the tournament. I did top out at 3mph with TM at full bore. New circuit breaker worked great. Never tripped once. Pleased there as well.

Despite the cold and rain, it turned out to be a good day. I think we found some good spots to fish, got a better feel for the strip pit contour and found a few holes. The trouble with the strip pit is there is prime cover/structure all over the place. Submerged trees, deep spots, and shallow spots all over the place. It can do from a few feet to over 60' deep in a boat length. Bring shear pins if you use your main motor and don't know the lake.
