I changed out the champion J6C's for new nGK plugs. Looking at the two side by side, the old electrodes were really burnt down. I also ordered an new carb kit. There were two orings in the old carb where the fuel adjustment knob went in that were hard as rocks and chewed up a little. Maybe little pieces of those were clogging it up. The knob did not seem to work very well..ie didn't seem to effect it much when it was running. Anyway..The compression also checked and was ok. Hoping the carb rebuild does the trick. I will pay careful attention to the float level when I change it..This one seems to be sitting a little high.

ok..I got my carb kit and I am stumped on something that is probably painfully obvious but I can't figure it out. I've tried about 20 times to get the needle to hang on the float arm but can't seem to get it right. How do you attach it and keep something from jamming?? Mine just fell off when I took it apart before I could see how the little wire was attached. I'm gonna feel stupid after i get the answer probably..but it's just eluding me so far!!!

I figured it out finally..I watched a carb rebuild on you tube and it had a close up of how it was attached..literally just hangs..I was trying to fit the wire into the holes in the arm...

Well..I'm happy! Finally got it to start and idle for a while
in a big plastic garbage pail, I discovered that I had put the float on upside down and had not tightened the center screw inside the carb tight enough..Pulled on it forever yesterday with no start but knew I was getting gas to it.. This morning after work decided to give it a try again.Set the handle just a little bit lower and pulled twice....She roared to life and then putted oh sooo sweetly! I missed my motor!!!!..Going to give it a try on the lake this afternnon.

I had a starting problem with my old 6 hp Evinrude recently. After awhile I enlisted the help of a young fellow standing nearby.
After about the third pull he asked if the arrow on the primer bulb should be pointing toward the tank. Duhh.

LOL! I had the plug turned around at the motor once...daughter noticed that!!..The simplest things..Going out now to try it out on a small lake...I don't want to have to row far if I have to row!!

well I tested it...started great at the ramp and ran very well for about 15 minutes...Started to deep water at wot and it just cut out again. I'm beginning to believe there might be an overheating problem but the water pump is working great..very strong stream coming out...soo..a small lake was good choice..since I don't have a trolling motor yet....Started to paddle and luckily a guy in a bass tracker noticed me after I had been rowing about 20 minutes and gave me a tow in.....After I got the boat home,I tried to start it again.Started right up and ran strong again...very perplexed by this.....

IF, this boat is on a trailer. Take it to the ramp, back it in, leave it hooked to trailer, crank it up and run it wide open and see if it does it again. Check bulb first by pumping and trying to start, if it won't jerk it out of the water and while motor is still hot check to see if your getting spark. Like CC said it could have a coil breaking down under heat or same thing with stator.

I had not even thought about a coil being the problem but it does make sense. I'll have to get this one off and test it. Thanks for that info!!
