If you just take it off and drain it, you never get it totally drained and the dirt stays in and so does some water. Like G says, replace it once a year. I replace mine when I service the engine. Using a 4 stroke engine, when the oil inside gets to looking dirty, I change it and already did that once this year. Doesn't any time and keeps the engine purring like a kitten.

Hello: Which type do you have ? 2 types available, one a 2 piece canister unit that has a clear plastic bottom with a drain on it so you can see what it has collected and drain it out. You only replace the upper canister. I replace mine every year. The other is just the canister. I have heard some guys with just the canister remove it a couple times a year and drain it. If you do it that way I would drain it and check to see how much water you have in it to see if you need to change it more often. I switched to the 2 piece system and it used the same base. Good Luck. O - R
