I drive a Chevy Traverse, 3.6L V6 with the tow package. The package offers all sorts of features, larger brakes, larger axles, larger radiator, 7 wire plug, with connections for brake controller under dash, tow/haul mode, and a few other things I know I'm forgetting. My traverse is front wheel drive and I average about 20-21mpg on the highway. Towing I get about 17-18mpg on the highway unless I let her run at about 2000 rpms, then I average about 14-15mpg on the highway. My boat/trailer fully loaded weighs 2880 pounds. Weighed last weekend. Includes a full tank of gas (22 gallons) and my 30 gallon live-well was full. With the tow package, I can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Without the tow package its only rated for 2000 pounds. I have no problem with stopping distance, and no problem getting up and going when I want to stomp on it. I do have 107,000 miles on her and she is due for a tune-up, tranny fluid change, and coolant change. It's a 2009.
Plus I can carry 7 passengers (4 captain chairs and a rear bench) and several dogs. There is a small cargo area behind the third row seating, big enough to haul all my boat gear, tackle boxes, sonar unit, and other stuff. However I added a cargo box to the boat trailer. That now carries all the boat/trailer gear. If I drop the rear bench I can haul all my camping gear and firewood, and still haul four to the campground.
The wife liked the sun roof (driver area), moon roof (passenger area), Bose stereo system, separate climate controls (driver/front passenger, and rear passengers), separate sound options for rear passengers, and a few other extras. All I wanted was the towing package.
