Default 1974 Johnson Outboard 6HP Help

Im stumped. I have cleaned the carb and installed new carb kit. I put all new seals and gaskets in the foot. The motor cranks and runs good.
It will open up in gear and run wide open, but when you put it in the water it loads up and will not open up in gear..It runs like a top when you take it out of gear it will open up and run like it should..
    Any suggestions comments...
    Thanks in Advance

sounds like you might have a spun hub on your prop !!! when you say it wouldn't open in gear does the motor rev up and the boat don't go no where ??? if that's the case you spun hub and will need to get a new one pressed in !!!

Sounds like you may still have something blocking your high speed jet. Let it sit upright for awhile and pull the float bowl. Check to see if you have any trash in it. Also disconnect the hose from fitting that plugs into motor. Get a clear, clean glass jar and pump some gas from tank into it. Let it set for awhile and see if you have any trash or water in it. May need to flush and clean tank. Also install some kind of filter in fuel system. Also could have a week fuel transfere pump.

I have the same year and size Evinrude. I don't think the prop has a hub as has been suggested, only a shear pin?
Mine hadn't been run in about 10 years. Last year I took it to a good shop and told the guy I wanted it made to run well.
He said he would first do a compression test before proceeding which went well. The total bill was close to $400, but
the thing purrs as well as it ever did when new. Rebuilt carb, new points which are under the flywheel, new water pump parts,
and a few other things like plugs ect.

You might check the head gasket. I had an old 6hp Evinrude that was doing something weird like that. I pulled the head and the gasket was blown out a little . The replacement gasket had a metal ring in it that goes around the cylinder to help prevent that.

I'm sorry my memory is not good enough anymore to remember exact details sometimes. I just don't remember exactly the symptoms the motor was having

But the gasket was cheap and it only took me a short time to replace.

When you put the back pressure of putting the motor in the water it changes how the motor exhaust and intakes fuel/air as I know you are aware. I was thinking a slight loss of compression might show up that way.

Are you running the motor out of the water?
    I'd rather be fishing.

Sometimes a coil will short out when motor gets warmed up. Had this happen on my 6hp johnson, same year model. Would run good for a few hundred yards and start skipping only running on one cylinder. If you pull spark plugs while engine is still warm, if it is coil, it will not fire plug, when you turn over motor. Hope you run down problem, it is a bummer to be land locked when fish are biting.

High speed jet, has to be partially plug or full, not back pressure when on a hose so very little fuel is used even to rev the engine, but in the water under a load , all the fuel vows through the high speed jet and it has to be plugged
