Default Rebuilding Trailer Bunks with Cypress

    Hello All:
I'm rebuilding my bunks with Cypress and I would like to know if I should put some kind of sealer on them. If so,what would ya'll recommend. I have a G3 aluminum and I concerned about chemicals reacting to the aluminum.

    Thanks:
    Mike

To the best of my knowledge, cypress is very rot resistant. I wouldn't treat them. I'm going with cypress when my bunks need replacing.

I also have a g3 aluminum boat. When I replaced my bunks, I used treated 2x4's. Bought a PVC 4x4 fence sleeve, ripped it in half, covered the bunks with it. 100% separation of boat/bunk board.
With the bottom of the board open, it can dry out quick, nothing to hold the water in. Hopefully I will not have to replace for a while.
The first couple of trips I was Leary of the boat sliding off the trailer when backing down the ramp. Have not experienced that.
I did paint the PVC black, to match the trailer.
I saw this entire idea on tinboats.com.

Skunked, that's it. When I read your post the light went on in my head. What an excellent idea. Have you noticed if the PVC is removing any paint from the bottom of the boat.

    Thanks:

I need to check that out further, will try to remember on my next trip to partially load on trailer, pull up and look underneath. The pvc has been on their for about 18 months now. Hopefully my next trip will be sometime next week.
I have crawled under when fully loaded on the trailer, am not seeing anything negative.

What does the PVC look like with the boat off the trailer. I'm sure that there is some scuffing but if the black paint is still there, then it seem that all is well.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'll get some pics of the bunks when I go next.
Not all the paint is still their. With that in mind, I did no prepping of the PVC beforehand, and sprayed with whatever paint I had on hand. Only painted so it didn't stand out so bad when the boat is off of the trailer.
I'm not worried about a little scuffing, I'f their is any, as I'm always in the bank retrieving lures anyway!
I lied to you about how long they've been on their. Its closer to 2½ years. 18 months ago was when I added storage areas and rod locker.

Their is more paint missing than what I thought on the trailer bunks. Looks are a bit deceiving though. I looked under bottom of boat, and did not see signs of wear on the boat. Not sure what you'll see in the pics.
