    Default OMC tilt/trim pump repair

My 40 horse Johnson (1998 or 1999 model I think....?) trim stopped going up and might need a rebuild. What are people charging roughly for a rebuild these days?

    Thanks!

May not be the fault of the pump, T dub.

I had a similar problem ... motor would trim up, but would not trim down. The down trim relay was shot. Replaced both (as per recommendation) and it works fine, now.

You may want to check the relays first ... loosen the release screw and push the motor up about half way, then tighten the release screw back -- then try and trim it back down with the trim buttons (on side of motor or throttle handle). If it trims down like it should, your up relay may be dead. If either/both trim button doesn't work, you may have a problem with them. If you raise it up and tighten the release screw, and the motor doesn't stay tilted up ... you may have a busted seal in the pump. (you may also want to check and make sure the pump fluid is up to correct level).

Now ... I'm no mechanic, and I'm just "supposing" possible problems .... based on what I read/saw online when researching my T/T problems. My motor is a 1999 Merc 90hp 2strk.

Okay thanks. Down works fine, but up is gone. I have to hold the up button while manually lifting the engine. The up still makes noise like it always has but goes nowhere.

Definitely sounds like a dead relay.

I thought it would be cheaper to buy mine online, but called my local marine sales just to compare prices ... and they had them for the same price as the cheapest online outlet (about $20/each). Did the replacing myself. (also kept the "good" relay, just as a temporary backup)

If the relay clicks and motor is running sounds like it could be low on fluid. Google adding fluid to trim unit on your motor. May be a YouTube video out there. I'm on my phone right now so can't do much searching. But will try when I get home.

Definitely low on fluid. Those systems are prone to leaking. Inspect the seal where the lift ram exits the system on top. You will probably see oil tracking down from that seal.
    I'd rather be fishing.
