    Default 1993 8 hp Mariner

It's been sitting in the garage for 15 years. I need it for a jon boat, so I am trying to get it running. I told the wife I would give it my best so I don't have to buy another one.
I put in a new water pump today, downloaded a manual and it was terrible about removing the lower unit, all it was good for was the pump itself. disconnecting the linkage wasn't even close to what I had to do. Anyways, I've got it back together, now when I put it in forward{not running} the prop will turn, but in reverse it jams up and wont turn at all. Does anybody have an idea of what I did wrong? It was a very good motor when I used it, so really would like to get it running.

Did you make sure everything was in neutral before you put it back together? It is best to make sure that the motor was in neutral setting even before taking it apart to install the new water pump and then being very careful not to change these setting when putting it back together. Now you may have to take it back apart then by turning the shaft find the center of neutral on the foot end then making sure that the control shifter is in neutral then put it all back together. I am by no means a outboard mechanic but I have put quite a few water pumps in outboards and I have had that problem before and that is what I had to do to fix the problem. Best of luck with your motor.

That is a common problem and due to the reasons Scrat mentioned. Also since you mentioned you had problems with the linkage, you might recheck that you have it hooked up correctly.

That worked, thanks Scrat and Barnical Bill. Hooked up the fuel and it actually started, have to work on the carburetor now. Looks like no new motor for me.

Awesome, glad you got her running.

Maybe a carb kit and some new plugs and she is just like new.... even if you had your heart set on a new one!

Out of curiosity, did the linkage disconnect just below the carb? And was the problem, reverse acted as if in a bind and prop had no free play?

Yes it did sliderman right below the carb, and like it was in a bind. I've got it running, hopefully on Friday I can take it out and see if I can brake it.

Good deal. For future reference, you will see that same symptom on occasion when shifting into reverse with motor off. It's caused by the reverse gear and clutch dog teeth. Perfectly normal and does not occur while running. Next time it happens, just turn the prop while shifting into reverse.
