I would go with the Yamaha. Got an 04 and never a problem.
My dad is thinking about buying a brand new bass boat. He is looking a boat with a 60hp Mercury four stroke on it. Looking for some input on these new Mercury 4 stroke. My dads is type of guy that holds on to things. So he is wondering if the new 4 stroke motors would be a long lasting, dependable, worry free motor.

X2 on the Yamaha. I've had the pleasure/ misfortune of having a mercury, e-tec, and Yamaha. The yamaha is by far better on fuel, tons quieter (you can have a normal conversation at full throttle), starts great. Like I said, I've had the major 3 and my next boat will have Yamaha.
I own a 2012 40hp Yamaha 4stroke wouldnt trade it for a whole new boat
I don't own a Merc 4 stroke but I know guys who do and guys who did. They don't have or didn't any real issues out of theirs.
I would own one in a heartbeat. In fact does any one have a good line on a good used 60 HP 4 stroke Merc or Yamaha?
I got a Merc 60 4 stroke.
Knock on wood, no problems. Actually I really like it. It's smooth, quiet, and reliable. That is a lot more than I could say for my old two stroke.
I guess time will tell, but I believe that if taken care of, it should last as long as me.
Actually I had more issues with the Yamaha when new, than I have with the Merc.

2012 is the year.
It is fuel injected, not carbureted. Starts and runs just like my truck.
The Yamaha is carbureted and I had some problems getting it started until I started running it out of gas every time I quit running it for more than a few hours.

I loved my Merc and never had any issues. It was my first fourstroke too. However this year I went to a bigger motor and got Yamaha mostly due to their multifunction tiller is *alot* cheaper than Mercurys version! Plus Yamaha seems to be the standard by which all are judged. The Suzukis are pretty nice too though. I know 2 other guides and 3 additional people running them with zero complaints and they come standard with six year warranty
