Default Change shutdown switch 25 hp mercury

The shutdown switch in the end or the tiller handle has stopped working. It is a 2000 25 hp mercury, does anyone know how to get that switch out and change it. It has to be an normally open switch and should not be too hard to find if I could just figure out how to get it out. Thanks!

Here is the diagram for a later model one. Should be bolt #10 and piece #20 in the above diagram. Remove these and unhook the switch and the entire unit should come out.

looks like your 2000 should be the same as above

Before you go to the trouble of removing the switch, follow the wiring down. You will most likely find a break in one of them near the tiller's pivot point. It would also be a good idea to insure that all the black-ylw stripe wires are connected to the switch box. The stop button is nothing more than a momentary contact switch. They can corrode and become non-operational but by a large margin, the problem is usually found in the wiring. Good luck

Will check the wiring first, thanks for the idea!
