    Question 24V verses 12v for trolling motors


    OK I'll admit I don't know squat about this, so I am asking what is the advantages of 24 volt trolling motors verses a 12 volt trolling motor? Does the added amps from two 12volt batteries hooked together to make the 24 volt batteries make that much difference verses one deep cycle battery and 12 volts. If someone can clarify this it might help me down the road when the time comes to get one or the other. thx.

    Depends on how big a boat your pulling around and how you fish. If just casting,single poling or spider rigging in 17 or smaller 12 be just fine. If bigger boat and long lining all day or pulling cranks the 24 with higher thrust is the ticket.

    OK. Thank you for the answer. It helps some what. And I could still hook two together (12v), still maintain the 12 volts, and have more time on the water with a 12v system, right. IE more amp hours of the 2 batteries equal time more running the TM. Am I understanding at this right? The boat will probably be in the 16' range.

    I have a 754vs WarEagle stick steer. Almost 18ft. I run a Terrova 55lb thrust on 2 12volt batteries hooked up like that. Run all day spider rigging or long lining and hardly discharge at all. Pulling cranks at 1.5 on fairly calm day can run 6-7 hrs. Wind gets up I just pull with big motor.

    If you have room for 2 trolling motor batteries why would you not have a 24 volt? My thoughts are that a motor that can do the same job at 25% power will out last one that is having to run at 40% to do the same job.

    With identical loads a 24 volt motor will use ½ the amperage that the 12 volt motor will use. This is why you get longer running times with a 24 or 36 volt system. Ohm's law.

    Now see, that's why I am asking. If you don't know, and don't ask, then you will never know. I haven't had nothing but the 12v system, and never even heard of a 24v TM till I joined this site. I seen where others were talking of them, and thought I would ask. A little knowledge goes a long way. I thank all of you for educating me on this. Now when I get to that point in time when I can implement it, I know I have more than one option open to me. Thank you again, you all are awesome....

    But the 12volt motor (identical load), with 2 bateries in parallel will have 2x the available "power" and will last the same amount of time.

    2 - 100ah batteries in series will provide the same run time at 24volts as an "identical load" 12 volt motor running off 2 - 100ah batteries in parallel.

    24volt set up (series) will provide 100amps for 1 hour (in series you "add" voltage and current is constant)

    12votls set up (parallel) will provide 200amps for 1 hour (in parallel you "add" current and voltage is constant)

    "Ohm's Law"

    The advantage of the 12v system is that should one battery "die" you can still run the motor.

    They both have their advantages/disadvantages. You have to decide which will work best for you.
