    I have a 1983 mercury 50 horse it idled fine starts right up no problem. I can rev the motor to the point it sounds like it is a close to blowing up. Then actually put it in gear and it runs about 8mph wiped open like it's bogging out but never dies or sputters. It has new gas, gas lines and fittings carbs were supposedly rebuilt a year and a half ago. Any thoughts appreciated.

    Sounds like the power jets are dirty. Run some Sea Foam through it. Should fix it right up.

    IMHO, you may have a carb running lean, (high speed/main jet clogged). not enough oil/fuel mixture (lubrication) gettin to the cylinder. if you have a lean/clogged carb, on a multi carbed/multi cylinder engine, it will ruin that cylinder very quickly. its best to take em off, and clean all of em. it doesn't take long to ruin a good motor runnin it too lean. i've seen way to many multi cylinder motors with 1 burnt cylinder, because of 1 carb being clogged up. if its a single carbed, mutli cylinder engine, its still best to take it off and clean it. carb kits and a little time cleaning is ALOT cheaper, then another powerhead. just my opinion. good luck, rick

    I personally think that it's lack of, or weak spark on 1 cylinder (classic symptom). Use an air gap spark tester (less than $10 at autozone) and make sure each wire will produce a spark that will jump a 1/4" gap with a bright blue spark at minimum.
    If all wires make a good spark, mix up some fuel/oil in a spray bottle and spray some in each carb with the motor running on the boat with the cowl off (you need a helper obviously), at above 1/2 throttle. If the motor bogs(floods), you're getting enough fuel. If the motor increases rpms, that cylinder/cylinders are lean due to a clogged high speed carb jet as mentioned.
    Another possibility is a weak fuel pump.
    A first step probably should be to check compression in all cylinders. Borrow a tester or buy one at an autoparts store (about 30$).
