    Default Transom Help

The transom on my 14 foot aluminum boat looks as if it has been rewelded on the top corners. When I trailed my 9.9 johnson for the first time on it the other day, the welded parts had cracked. It's just on the top though. Also, everytime I trim my motor the transom seems very weak and bends a good bit. I no longer trail my outboard with it on the transom. Is there a way to reinforce it with a metal sheet of some sort? Thanks for the help.

willy, i made angle braces for my jon boat when the corners cracked. if you can weld it's easy or someone that can do it for you. 4 6 to 8 inch pieces of 1 1/2 angle iron and 2 pieces of 1 inch flat iron bour 9 or 10 inches long. lay the angle pieces along side of boat and back of transom at the corners and lay the flat iron on top and tack weld then take it off and weld it good. place it back on the corners and drill two holes for quarter inch bolts on the transom and on each side and bolt. problem is over.

You can put a "patch" on it, but if the transom is "weak" as you say it would be better to just get a piece of plywood, do it right and replace it.

This is the way to go; you can 'patch' it all you want, but rebuilding the transom wouldn't cost much more and would last much longer.

bricks, you missed where i said set the angles back on the boat and drill holes and bolt that to each corner. they are not welded to the boat. you can make them as big as you want or to reach as far towards the transom center as needed. my boat and willys was only cracking at the corners. mine has been on my boat for 25 years and no problems.

If this was from a previous transom repair. I'd be concerned of the rest of the job, according to how you've explained they repaired the upper corners. I believe before I had the weld issues fixed, I'd replace the wood, just to be sure it was done properly.
