    Default Need some advice

I have a 98 model 40 hp Force on my Tracker Panfish 16, love the boat and setup. My problem is with the motor, it starts easy and idles fine after a short warm up. The problem starts about 200 - 300 yards into WOT then it acts like it's running out of gas and shuts down. I guess I need to mention that the tank is a 6 gallon vented portable. I have looked at the tank filter and the in line filter, both appear to be in good shape and clean (I can blow thru them with what feels like no restrictions) and both plugs look good. When this happens the bulb is soft. After restart it idles a little rough but the smooths out. Now it does the same thing at 75% throttle. This is really getting frustrating. Any ideas?????? Maybe replace the connections?

If the bulb is soft, and you have to pump it up again to get it going, or if you can pump the bulb continuously and it will keep running? It is a bad bulb, hose, connection (leaking down and letting it lose prime), or vent not open on tank Don't buy cheap bulb from Walmart, they are junk! Check all hoses and connections and replace the bulb. Hope this helps.

Thanks for heading me in the right direction. Went out and inspected the connections and bulb again. This time I disconnected the line from the tank and pumped the bulb and could hear air escaping from under the clamp. Getting a new clamp hoping problem is solved.

Last year I had the same problem and ended up replacing the fuel line and bulb. Problem solved!

If that doesn't solve the problem rebuild the fuel pump. But make sure you get the kit from Mercury. It contains new style check valves that will fix that problem. It is talked about in Mercury's Service Information Advisory No. 2001-17. This is one of the very few actual ethanol problems that has been documented. What happens is the original check valves have rubber edges and over time ethanol causes them to curl up and not seal properly.

Thank you for the replies. I am going to get a new line and bulb with factory connections and clamps. I was concerned it might be the fuel pump but really hoping the new line fixes the problem. Thanks again!

Fuel Pump on that motor is VERY basic and simple to replace. If you can use a screwdriver and ratchet it will likely take you longer to buy the parts then it will to replace it.

Yes it is simple. Just be sure to put it back together the same way you take it apart. I always scribe a mark on all sections so they match when I put it back together. It can be assembled wrong.
