    Default Trolling motor supply voltage

Has anyone ever tried to get slower speeds on a 12v fixed (5/3) speed trolling motor by using a 6v battery?? I need a slower speed to tightline for winter time crappie in deep water. I think the older models of variable speed t/m were controlled by rehostats (sp) or resistors which acts as a voltage reducer. If a 6v (golf cart type) battery were used instead of the 12v would that cut the speeds in half or would the motor windings overheat and be damaged due to the constant lower voltage. It would seem that the principle would be the same whether you are reducing voltage with a heavy duty resistor or with a supply voltage of only 6 volts. I realize that there are variable speed motors available but the motor I have is almost new and I have a custom mount for it. Would like to hear of your experience or expertise for this situation. Slower top speeds will not be a problem. Thanks

Reducing voltage is not usually a good idea. The motor will draw more current and run hotter. Watch eBay and look for a Minn Kota Maximizer or look at Canepole's posts about PWM controller.
