    Default solar powered battery charger

Anyone used a solar powered battery charger? i bought one about 4 months ago and it worked great because i only fished on the weekends so it gave me a week to charge my trolling motor battery. Well about a month ago my battery and charger went bad at about the same time. I tested them with a multi-meter and the battery was only reading 9V and its a 12 volt batttery and the charger was reading 0 amps when it normally would read 350mAmps when it was working. Luckily my battery has a 1 year warranty and i was able to exchange it. the solar powered charger has a 5 year limited warranty but i havn't tried taking it back yet so i don't know if they will give me trouble. I just thought it was weird that both went out at the same time so didn't want to get another one if it was possibly killing my battery. If anyone has any experience with a solar powered battery charger or knows about them please let me know.

I had one for about 2 weeks. Mine didn't have the capability to go into maintenance mode when the battery was charged and boiled the Battery. I wasn't able to keep check on the system so I took it back and got an automatic charger at wally for under $40 which shut off once the battery was topped off, and came back on as the voltage dropped. I have since traded t a bigger boat with 3 Batteries and have put an on board charger in and wonder why all of my boat in the past years haven't had one. Worth every dime, batteries always ready, and the only down side is that an electrical storm will take em out if plugged in when a strike occurs. 1 bank per battery (3 bank for 3 batteries) and kiss your troubles goodbye.

350 Mili Amps is not enough to charge a 12 volt TM Battery.... That probably is what killed the charger....you were over working it. Get you a good on board battery charger with a bank for every battery on your boat. Minn-Kota makes a good one.

So your battery was never getting fully charged and lead to killing the battery at the same time.

I bought this for my tin boat. Product Page

If the link doesn't work, it is the diehard platinum 6/12 volt battery maintainer. Got it for $ 25 on sale. I think it is on sale now for $29.99. It works like an onboard charger that goes into maintenance mode when the battery is charged. I only have one battery on the tin boat so it fits my needs well. It is small, inexpensive, and portable. I also use it for the lawnmower battery.
