I have carried one of these for years for horse trailers. Same principal, but I like the way it holds tire in place and it is light weight to store behind seat. Trailer-Aid Here is an example. Coastal RV Reviews the Trailer-Aid - YouTube

Mine works fine on all surfaces. You must not be placing it correctly on the axle.

This is what I use on my single axle trailers.

Not fancy but stupid simple and works every time.....$10........Sometimes it does not pay to get fancy when you really just need to get it done and over with.

but then again....what do I know

I have one of the easy lifts and it has worked great for me. I also carry a 3-ton speed jack anytime I am out with a trailer of any kind. Just as important is lug wrench and tools to remove your spare.
