Default paint peeling off lower half of motor

Been looking at a 2000 sylvan with a 2000 Johnson 50 hp 2 stroke. Boat looks nice fires up and a good price but what would cause the paint to be coming off lower part of motor? Anyone ever see this before?

I have seen it before , not sure the quality control department was on the ball back then, that was around the time that OMC started to spirel down the drain. I have seen both Johnsons and Evinrudes that look like this, a little sanding and some factory touch up spray paint and looks like new as long as you clean and prep the area good.

X2 sand and prime with some Zinc Chromate primer then paint with factory paint.

Poor priming and paint job I would say at the factory. I remember back in the early 90's when Fords had a problem with paint reeling and it was a primer issue.

Paint peeling wouldn't scare me off if the outboard checks out mechanically. You can still find OMC factory paint colors at dealers that will math up to the original.

This concerns me as I'm also having some paint issues this year. I can still see both anodes but if they're getting weak what symptoms would appear and are they expensive to get replaced? My motor is 17 years old.

If you have problem with electrolysis the anoids will get pitted and flaky and start to dissolve.if you can still see them after 17 years I doubt that is your problem. Some of the companies that far back had issues with primers on aluminum because the gov made them take some of the additives out so paint didn't adhear very well.
