    Default yamaha outboards

I see alot of yamaha motors on big bass boats and am going to look at a 19' skeeter with a 200 hp yamaha on it but dont know anything about the motor. Are they good motors, how do they compare to the others, and what are the main problems with these motors? thanks guys

Best motor on the market in my opinion. Can't tell you about problems because I have had none..Zero....in 12 years.... Main thing is to find out how the owner has maintained it.
I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin' and hook up with them later.

I have had one three years and my nephew for 5 yrs with 0 problems! I went and asked mechanics at two different shops what motor do they work the least on or have the less break downs? Both places said Yamaha came in shop less! Take into consideration that how someone uses and takes care has alot to do with durability of any motor! I would consider myself to be a little rough on one and my nephew is extremely rough. Mine is a 90 and his is a 225.

I've had three. Problems really depend on motor technology but most are very minor. You didn't state if it's an HPDI, OX66, or carb. Yamaha has really good electronics most problems tend to be related to fuel pump diaphragms and oxygen sensors but even those are not abundant. Add ring free to the gas and don't over prop it and it will run strong for years. My current motor is a four stroke Yamaha and its the smoothest running outboard I've had yet. I'll never go back to a two stroke.

We have owned several over the years and my next boat will be powered by a Yamaha. No major issues with our's other than routine maintenance issues. Last one was a 200 HDPI that was a mean pig that could outrun a lot of 225's and would run head to head with a few 250's on a Stratos 294XL. I am currently looking at either a G3 or Alumacraft deep-v powered by a Yamaha F115.

One of the yamahas i s a 1997 pro v 200 on a 1997 skeeter zx 190c and the other is a v max 3.1L 225 on a 2002 sprint bass max 21. What kind of speed would you expect out of these two rigs?

I would expect mid to upper 60's out of the 200/190c combo and low to mid 70's out of the 225/max 21 combo. You may see slightly better than that if you do some set-up work and try different props and/or have your prop blueprinted. I had a 2003 Skeeter TZX190 (an 18.5' boat) with a HPDI 175 and it would run 67-68 but I did a lot of set up work and prop tinkering. The best I ever saw was 68.5mph with a blueprinted Yamaha 25M prop. That is true gps speed not speedo readings. The HPDIs will get better gas mileage but there are more things to worry about on them. The old carb motors and even the OX66 which was a fuel injection but not a high pressure injection were almost bullet proof. I really liked my HPDI. It started right up every time, ran smooth, had great throttle response, and was easy on fuel if you didn't stand on the gas all day. I sold that boat to get one I could use for fishing and hunting and opted for the four stroke this time. Prior to the HPDI I had a little 16' Skeeter with a 85hp Yamaha. It was a good motor too. I ran it for years, sold it to a friend who ran it for years, and then he sold it to a friend and I'm sure it's still running. Good luck with the boat buying.
