    Default power or speed prop?

I just bought a 2002 50 hp johnson and put on my 16' deep v, it has tilt and trim. I had a 30 hp tilt and trim johnson on it before and the gps on my depthfinder said it was running about 22 to 23 mph. I took the 50 hp out for the first time today and ran good, the gps said 25 to 26 mph. When you take off, the hole shot is really fast up to full speed and thats it. The motor came off a pontoon and I am wondering if I need a different prop. How can you tell what prop you have and what prop you need? I figured that the 50hp would run around 30 to 35 mph, I thought there should be a great difference adding 20 hp. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you could change the prop to get both the holeshot AND more speed. I'd ask a mechanic because I know there's a limit on rpm's you should be turning without going over. Proibably would be good to just have them do it so you dont have to buy more than one prop.Thumbs Up

Do you have a tach on the boat? It would be easy to believe that the 50 came with a prop too small for your needs. On a 16'er, I would guess you should be needing a 15p, maaaaybe a 17p.

Thanks for the info guys, sliderman, I do not have a tach on my boat, I have always just used the trim by feel and how the boat responded.

You need a tach on the boat when re-proping or changing props so you can tell where you are at. Then you need to find out what the max rpm range is for your motor. You go up in pitch to lower rpms and down in pitch to raise the rpms. Lower rpms gives you the good hole shot and higher rpms gives you speed so you want a prop that will give you a happy medium which is usually just slightly lower rpms than the max rating of your motor. But that is in theory and you still have to factor in the boat weight, width, etc. Most boat shops can pretty much determine which prop you need and then if it does not work out on the trial run they will change props untill they get it right.

That new motor isn't a long shaft by any chance? The anti cavitation plate should be even with the bottom of the boat. Consider a tach so we know your RPMs at WOT. Tiny-Tach: Gasoline Tachometers

Barnacle Bill- it is a long shaft, which my older lowe deep v needs, and the anti cavitation plate is pretty well even with the bottom of the boat. Is the tiny tach pretty accurate, the price isnt bad.

B.B., send me a pm with a pic and description of your prop. I may be able to help you out if it's for a pontoon. .......sliderman
