Question Evinrude ETEC or Mercury 4 stroke ???

Which would you choose? I really like the fuel economy of the 4 stroke, but, more maintenance...comments welcome:D

I would prefer a Yamaha four stroke....Had a 115 four stroke the past 6 years and just got a new boat with a 90 Yamaha four stroke. Easier to start, quieter, better on gas, and less maintenance in the end because no carbs.....fuel injection. I love four strokes.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I'm a mercury man but everything I've read or heard about the Etec is positive. There's a lot less maintenance with the Etec. There is no regular maintenance on the Etec for the first three years, not even lower unit oil replacement. Then after the first maintenance is done, you don't have anything to do for the next three years. When you figure the cost of maintenance, that's a lot of money. Good luck on your choiceThumbs Up

I'm leaning towards the Merc 60 4 stroke "Bigfoot"...More torque than the regular, larger gearcase, a little tougher than the regular...I talked to a salesman at Cabela's here in La, he said he sells very few ETEC's.He said the high humidity down South keeps them in the shop....thanks for the info.:D

Neither,I would go with a yamaha I have 2,a 4 stroke and a 2 stroke and have had good luck with both so far.I thought the bigfoot's are for pontoon boat's mainly and the merc you are looking at is a tihatsu motor.Just my opinion.

Tohatsu makes ALL Nissan outboards. (same motor, different decals)
Tohatsu makes all Merc's under 40hp ... so I don't think the 60hp bigfoot would be in that category.

Just do your homework and get the brochures from the different manufacturers and compare features. Evinrude will mail you a packet that contains a demo DVD and has some interesting information on it. I don't know about the others. I am getting my E-Tec this week. I am hoping it will live up to the expectations that have been set in the DVD.

There are a lot of features the E-Tecs have that I haven't seen on other motors. I liked the 3 year service interval and ability to self fog the motor without much hassle. I am looking forward to using touch troll to fine tune the trolling speed. There are other reasons but that is the highlight of what helped make my decision.

One thing to really pay attention too is the weight. If your boat was designed for a two stroke motor be sure to watch the weight of the new motor you pick. Too heavy of a motor could lead to some undesirable results.

Good luck on your decision. Hopefully the motor you pick will give you many years of hassle free service.

    Jim
