Tohatsu makes all Merc's under 40hp ... so I don't think the 60hp bigfoot would be in that category.

I guess that would make the lower 40 mercs, mercsu's then..Doh. I laso heard that yammy builds the merc four stroke powerheads. So that would make em what ?mercyommahotzu,s

I know its not one of your choices, but Iv had 2 yamaha's and just bought my first Merc, this year and I already regret it. Open your horizens. NO 2 strokes................

Buy the only U.S. built 60hp outboard...Evinude E-Tec. Although the Evinrude is a 2-stroke, it is fuel injected, uses little oil and fuel, better emissions than ANY 4-stroke. The Evinrude already has a large gearcase for handling a large load.

Leave the 4-strokes in autos where they belong.

Rofl @ your cross brand names

Merc & Yamaha aren't "partners" any longer. Big lawsuit, several years back, put an end to all that. Doh

Here's some interesting reading, and a little clarification on the cross brand naming (though not as humorous as yours :D ) : Dealer Says Yamaha Makes Mercury Four-cycle 115-HP Motors - Moderated Discussion Areas (specifically "jimh" statements)

Do your research not only on the manufacturers but also on the service end of things. These days all of the major players are putting out good stuff. It means a lot to me to have good, fair service close to home. I have a 2005 Mercury 60hp EFI 4 stroke. Starts better than most cars, very quiet, good on fuel and has never broken down. Have been trolling for up to 3 hrs straight then hit WOT and took off without bog down. The only maintenance done, had the spark plugs replaced after 3 years (appx 1000 miles) and plugs looked new, Merc mechanic said to keep them as spares. Motor oil & filter, lower unit lube and 1 water pump at 3 years. I'm due to do water pump again this year. I'm not pushing Mercury, just want you to know my experience. Hope it helps you.

    Set the hook.

I talked to a guy at Ascension Marine in Prarieville yesterday. They carry Evinrude and Honda outboards...both good stuff. He told me the E-Tec and Honda 40 HP are both great motors...but the E-Tec will run away from the Honda and any other 4 stroke while using very close to the same fuel. I think he said if you use 1 gal in the 4 stroke you would use maybe 1 cup more in the E-Tec, and any of the new motors with EFI would be a vast improvement over my 03 whether it was a 2 or 4 stroke ( like close to half the fuel usage).

I really like the No Maintenance part for three years. He told me a regular three year service would be 1hr or less of shop time + parts and if you change the water pump at that time it would be 2 1/2 to 3 hrs + parts. Not sure about a 4 stroke for same three yrs but I know there is a lot more to one and oil changes, etc.

E-Tec gives you an extra 2 yrs warranty making it 5 yrs total if you buy before 4/15 I think...Mercury has same deal if bought before 5/31. Haven't got that deep in the others yet.

In a 40 HP I don't think there is a big weight difference...probably is in larger motors. And I would bet there's not 1-2 mph difference in all the brands of 4 stroke at this HP.

Lots of things to consider when spending that amount of money...I can't afford to make a stupid mistake. I believe though, the competition is so tight in 40 HP that any major brand would be a good motor...?
