    Default mercury switch box

well i've got an 81 merc 115 inline 6 that has always run great until a couple weeks ago when it started running rough. I was a couple miles from the ramp and it wouldn't go over 10mph. Anyway, I dug into it today and found that i'm only firing on 3 cylinders....2,4,&6. There are two CDI switchboxes and the dead cylinders 1,3,&5 share the same switchbox. Should i continue troubleshooting or just go ahead and replace the switchbox?

Also if i do replace the switchbox is there anything that i should be looking at that might have caused the old one to fail? i'd hate to install a new one only to blow it also.

Here is a test for you. Swap the stator leads end to end on the switch box (Red with red/white and blue with blue/white). If the problem moves to the other cylinders, the stator is bad. It the problem stays on the same cylinders, the switch box is likely bad.

If it is the switchbox you really should replace both of them for a couple reasons. Because of the bias between the 2 the bad one can make the good one look bad. Also if those are the original switchboxes, a replacement is going to be at a much higher revision level than the old one. Having one old one and one new one could cause the motor to run poorly and damage the new box.

thanks Bill, just swaped the stator leads between the switchboxes and the problem stuck with the same cylinders...looks like i'm buying a pair of switchboxes. Does anyone recommend a good place to buy them....preferably cheap?

Do a search on CDI marine parts. They are cheaper than Merc and made much better.

I found good prices at seilermarine.com. Found it through google. All good info, just went through this last year myself. Changed one and the boat ran, changed the other and it runs like a scalded dog now.
