    Default New boat owner-

I have a 15' Jon boat that came with a 6hp Johnson outboard. I have never owned a boat before; all I know for sure is that I saw the motor start with one pull of the rope.

QUESTION: are there any maintenance things I should do to the motor before I trust it to get me back to the dock?

    Thank you!

TK congrats and welcome aboard. Pretty simple motor: gas, fire, drive. Gas- keep the tank full in cold weather, helps with moisture problems. Or, inside if possible. Fire- good plug and check the pull cord, it sucks when they break while playing. Drive-throttle moves freely and engages, maybe check linkages for wear or play. Play causes wear. Impellor/water pump is it peeing? Lower unit oil- if milky oil comes out, the seals probably need replaced before changing oil. If you run the gas out after using you'll save yourself carb work. I'm sure others will help, theres some sharp ol' boys who've seen or done it all before. Good luck

Change the water impeller. It will save you money down the road. Also you should change the Lower unit oil. When you do check to see if there any water in the oil. Here is a oil change video YouTube - How to Service Your Lower Unit here is a water impeller video YouTube - How to Replace a Water Pump on a 25 hp Yamaha Outboard

Be sure to use outboard oil rated TCW-3 and mix it 50:1.
