    Default 2005 Mercury 50 hp 2 stroke

I have a 2005 50 hp Mercury 2 stroke and I am wandering if there is anything that I can do to get more power out of it. Are there any aftermarket parts or changes I can make on it? I would like to add to the top end I have the right props for different conditions but what else is there that I can do?

Buy a bigger motor. Seriously tho, there are no magic add-ons. Make sure the boat is loaded evenly and the hull is clean and your motor mounted properly. A jack plate may give you a little more speed. Your prop(s) should be pitched so your motor will run towrds the high side of the recommended RPMs at WOT.

That’s kind what I was hoping for was a magic add on. I got it all clean and loaded evenly just was hoping to find a way to pull some more power out of it. I am looking for a used 75 to 90 right now but there hard to come by for a good price. If I buy a new one I think I am going to go all out and upgrade to a new bigger boat with all the extras I can get. I have been saving for three years for a new one and my old one is paid off but I wanted to wait one more year tell my boys are a little older before I go with something with lower sides and a lot faster.

Your Merc should be a 59 ci. three cylinder. You can bump it up to around 65 hp. by changing out the reed valves and adding 60 hp. carbs, but this will probably only give you a couple mph over what you're currently running. I do know that these motors like to turn. Mine is spinning 5,500 rpms empty and 5,300 or so with a load. I'd like to see 5,500 loaded. I personally know of several that are spinning in the 6,000 rpm range wherever they go without negative results.

That is one of the reasons a tach is a valuable tool to have hooked up. You can tell at a glance if you are really having problems or it just "feels" like it. Have you put any additional gear in the boat? Put on weight? Prop damage? Etc.

    Glass or Alum hull?
If it is alum. ck. and see if you have any new bottom deformation due to stumps, trailer, etc.

On the other hand, that motor is toast..... I'll give ya 3 bucks for it.

Run some Merc Quick-Kleen in your gas, or fog your motor and run the quick-kleen. That stuff is awesome, you might be carboned up on your rings from this great gas we have. At least when it was $4/gal they gave us good gas. Fuel injector cleaners that are in your gas are alcohol and treat your motor like water does, except it gums up the rings and starts the carbon-fouling. I ran it in my boat this summer and it's the s#*t, 15 min of running and I had a brand new motor, felt like it doubled in power. Another thing, in the winter you should get a little more rpm's because of water density.

It's amazing how much heavier a boat gets as you use it. Bigger batteries, change trolling motor, more tackle, bigger belly, growing kids. 150 or 200 lbs can really change boat performance.
